The 10 Greatest Turntables of All Time: A Founder’s Personal Collection and the Machines That Made Me Fall in Love with Vinyl

What started with a Technics SL-1600 in 2022 turned into a collection of six turntables and hundreds of records. Here are the legendary turntables every music lover should know.

Must read

Every founder has something that helps them disconnect from the noise.

For some, it’s sports. For others, it’s travel, photography, cars, or books.

For me, it’s music.

Long before I started building businesses, launching products, writing on IMFOUNDER, or spending countless nights working on startup ideas, I was fascinated by music. Not just songs, but the equipment behind the music. The receivers, speakers, amplifiers, turntables, and the engineering that brought artists into our living rooms.

As entrepreneurs, we spend most of our lives building things. Maybe that’s why I’ve always been drawn to products that were built to last.

Back in 2022, I purchased my very first serious turntable — a Technics SL-1600.

I still remember bringing it home, cleaning it, setting it up, and carefully dropping the needle onto a record. There was something magical about it. It wasn’t just listening to music. It was experiencing it.

That one turntable opened a new world.

Soon after, I added a Technics SL1700 and SL-1200 MK5 to my collection. Then another turntable. Then another.

Today, I own six turntables, hundreds of vinyl records, and several collectible pieces of vintage audio equipment. Some of them are over forty years old and still perform beautifully.

The same passion eventually led me to restore a vintage Marantz receiver, a project I documented here on IMFOUNDER. During that restoration journey, I learned something important: great products never truly die. They simply find new owners who appreciate them.

That lesson applies equally to startups.

The best companies and the best audio equipment share the same DNA. They are thoughtfully designed, beautifully engineered, reliable, and built with enough care that people still talk about them decades later.

So today, I want to share my personal list of ten legendary turntables that every music lover, collector, entrepreneur, and audiophile should know about.

These aren’t necessarily the most expensive turntables ever made.

They’re the machines that earned their place in history.

1. Technics SL-1200 Series

Best vintage turntable Technics

No turntable list is complete without the legendary Technics SL-1200.

Originally introduced in the 1970s, the SL-1200 became the benchmark for reliability and precision. DJs trusted it. Audiophiles respected it. Collectors still hunt for clean examples today.

My own SL-1200 MK5 remains one of the most satisfying pieces in my collection.

Founder Lesson:

Build something so reliable that your customers refuse to replace it.

2. Technics SL-1600 & SL-1700 (MK1)

Technics SL1600 MK1 is one of the best vintage turntable in the world.

This spot holds a special place in my heart because the SL-1600 started my vinyl journey.

These fully automatic and semi-automatic direct-drive turntables delivered everything people loved about Technics engineering while making vinyl accessible to everyday listeners.

Decades later, many are still spinning records daily.

Founder Lesson:

Sometimes the product that changes your life isn’t the flagship product. It’s the one that gets you started and trust me this is one of the top vintage turntable you can buy.

3. Thorens TD-124

Ask serious collectors about legendary vintage turntables and the Thorens TD-124 will almost always enter the conversation.

Built with Swiss precision, it remains one of the most respected turntables ever produced.

Founder Lesson:

Craftsmanship never goes out of fashion.

4. Garrard 301

The Garrard 301 is more than a turntable.

It’s a piece of engineering history.

Its industrial design, mechanical complexity, and incredible durability have made it one of the most sought-after vintage decks on earth.

Founder Lesson:

Products built without shortcuts eventually become legends.

5. Marantz 6300

As someone who appreciates vintage Marantz equipment, the Marantz 6300 deserves a place on this list and it’s my personal favourite.

Beautiful wood veneer, elegant design, excellent performance, and unmistakable Marantz styling make it one of the most collectible vintage turntables today.

Every time I look at a 6300, I’m reminded that audio equipment once doubled as furniture, art, and engineering all at once.

Founder Lesson:

Design creates emotional attachment.

6. Bang & Olufsen Beogram 4000

Bang & Olufsen Beogram 4000

Even today, the Beogram 4000 looks futuristic.

Its minimalist Scandinavian design proves that great aesthetics can survive generations of changing trends.

Founder Lesson:

When design and engineering work together, products become timeless.

7. Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB

For many younger vinyl enthusiasts, this is the gateway turntable.

Affordable, dependable, and easy to use, it has introduced thousands of people to record collecting.

Founder Lesson:

The easiest product to adopt often wins.

8. VPI Prime

Modern craftsmanship at its finest.

The VPI Prime proves that there is still room for premium, enthusiast-focused products in a world obsessed with convenience.

Founder Lesson:

Never underestimate passionate customers.

9. McIntosh MT10

The MT10 combines luxury, performance, and visual drama.

It’s one of those products that immediately captures attention before a single note is played.

Founder Lesson:

People remember experiences, not specifications.

10. Technics SL-1000R

The modern successor to decades of Technics innovation.

This turntable demonstrates what happens when a company respects its heritage while embracing modern engineering.

Founder Lesson:

Innovation works best when it builds upon a strong foundation.

Final Thoughts

Streaming made music easier.

Vinyl made music meaningful.

In a world where everything is becoming digital, instant, and disposable, turntables remind us to slow down.

You don’t skip through twenty songs in ten minutes.

You choose an album.

You sit down.

You listen.

You appreciate.

As founders, we often chase the next feature, the next launch, the next milestone.

Vinyl taught me something different.

Some experiences are worth taking slowly.

Some products deserve decades of appreciation.

And some machines become more valuable with time.

Whether you’re a founder, collector, audiophile, or simply someone who loves music, I hope this list inspires you to discover the incredible world of turntables.

Who knows?

Your first turntable might become the start of a lifelong passion—just like my Technics SL-1600 did back in 2022.
