I’ve been an Apple fan for longer than I care to admit. I’ve waited in lines, refreshed Apple.com at midnight, and convinced friends and family that yes, the premium is worth it. So believe me when I say this with love: Monday’s launches left me a little hollow inside.
On March 2, 2026, Apple kicked off what Tim Cook himself hyped as “a big week ahead” — a multi-day product blitz spanning three days, with in-person media experiences planned in New York, London, and Shanghai on March 4. The energy was real. The anticipation was real. And then the press releases dropped, and I sat there staring at my screen thinking… that’s it for day one?
Two products. An iPhone and an iPad. Both iterative. Both perfectly fine. Both deeply, profoundly, safe.
Let me walk you through what Apple announced, give you all the specs and pricing you need — in both USD and CAD — and then let’s have an honest conversation about what this all means.
📱 iPhone 17e — The “e” Stands for “Expected”

The iPhone 17e is Apple’s most affordable entry point into the iPhone 17 family. On paper, it’s a genuine upgrade. In my heart? It’s a reminder that Apple’s budget line is still wearing a notch in 2026. A notch. While the flagship iPhone 17 sports a Dynamic Island, the 17e ships with the same forehead cutout design we’ve had since 2017. Nine years, people.
But let’s be fair and give Apple its credit where it’s due.
What’s New in iPhone 17e
The biggest headline is the A19 chip — the same processor powering the flagship iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. That’s genuinely impressive for a $599USD device. The 6-core CPU is built on 3-nanometer technology and delivers up to 2x the performance of the iPhone 11. The 4-core GPU supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, meaning actual AAA gaming titles look and play beautifully on this thing. The 16-core Neural Engine is optimized for Apple Intelligence, running on-device AI faster than the previous generation.
Apple also finally — finally — added MagSafe. The iPhone 16e launched without it, which felt like a strange punishment for budget buyers. The 17e fixes that oversight, supporting up to 15W MagSafe wireless charging, compared to the measly 7.5W Qi on its predecessor. You also get USB-C fast wired charging that hits 50% in about 30 minutes.
The C1X modem — Apple’s latest in-house cellular chip — is a notable upgrade too. It’s up to 2x faster than the C1 in the iPhone 16e and uses 30% less energy than the modem in iPhone 16 Pro. For anyone who’s ever watched their battery drain while roaming, that efficiency matters.
On the camera front, the 48MP Fusion camera delivers an optical-quality 2x Telephoto — essentially two cameras in one. Portrait mode has been improved with next-generation depth processing, and the phone can now automatically detect people, dogs, and cats to apply depth information after the fact. Night mode and 4K Dolby Vision video round out a camera system that genuinely punches above its price class.
The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display features the new Ceramic Shield 2, offering 3x better scratch resistance and reduced glare versus last year. IP68 water resistance and an aerospace-grade aluminum body round out a build that, honestly, feels premium in the hand.
Base storage has doubled to 256GB — at the same starting price as before. That alone is a win for consumers. The 17e also comes in a new Soft Pink color alongside black and white, which is a small mercy after the 16e launched with exactly two color options like it was 2009.
What’s Still Missing (And It Hurts)
No Dynamic Island. Still a notch. No ProMotion 120Hz display — you’re stuck at 60Hz in 2026. No telephoto lens of its own (the 2x is computational, not a second physical camera). And while the Ceramic Shield 2 is genuinely excellent, this phone looks identical to its predecessor from the outside. If you handed me an iPhone 16e and an iPhone 17e side by side, I’d have to squint at the box.
The single-camera setup also puts it at a real disadvantage against the Google Pixel 10a, which is shaping up to be its closest rival. Apple’s own camera shootouts against Google haven’t always gone well for the budget iPhone, and a single-lens system isn’t going to change that narrative.

💻 iPad Air with M4 — A Great Tablet That Looks Exactly the Same

If the iPhone 17e made me sigh, the iPad Air with M4 made me shrug — not because it’s a bad product (it absolutely isn’t), but because I’ve been staring at this same rectangular slab of aluminum for what feels like an eternity.
Same design. Same four colors — blue, purple, starlight, and space gray. Same starting prices. The only thing that changed is what’s under the hood. And to Apple’s credit, what’s under the hood is substantially better.
What’s New in iPad Air M4
The jump from M3 to M4 is real and meaningful. The new 8-core CPU and 9-core GPU deliver up to 30% faster performance than the M3 model, and up to 2.3x faster than M1. If you’re on an older iPad Air, that speed difference will genuinely transform how the device feels — editing video, handling large files, or running AI-heavy apps.
Speaking of AI: unified memory jumps 50% to 12GB, and memory bandwidth increases to 120GB/s. This matters enormously for Apple Intelligence tasks and on-device AI models. The 16-core Neural Engine is 3x faster than M1’s. For students transcribing lectures, creators working with Final Cut Pro or Pixelmator Pro, or business users polishing presentations — the M4 iPad Air is now the best value in Apple’s tablet lineup, period.
The new connectivity chips are a welcome addition. N1 brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support. Cellular models now carry the C1X modem, delivering up to 50% faster cellular data performance and 30% less modem energy usage than the M3 model.
Everything else you love about iPad Air remains: Apple Pencil Pro support, Magic Keyboard compatibility, all-day battery life, the Liquid Retina display in both 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, USB-C connectivity, and iPadOS 26.
What’s Still Missing (I’m Not Over It)
No OLED. The iPad Pro got a stunning tandem OLED display, and the Air is still rocking LCD Liquid Retina. For photo editors and artists, this gap is visible. No ProMotion 120Hz either — the Air is capped at 60Hz while the Pro glides at a buttery 120Hz. And honestly, I’d love to see some design freshness. The iPad Air hasn’t had a real exterior redesign in years, and while “if it ain’t broke” is a valid philosophy, a little inspiration wouldn’t hurt.
iPad Air with M4 is a fantastic tablet for most people. But if you were hoping Apple would close the gap with the Pro on display technology, you’ll be waiting at least another cycle.

🌸 One Small Win: The Spring Collection
Alongside the hardware, Apple dropped its new Spring Collection of silicone cases, crossbody straps, and Apple Watch bands. Colors include a pinkish-orange Bright Guava, Soft Pink, Light Moss, Anchor Blue, and Vanilla. There are also new Hermès bands on the premium end. It’s Apple doing what Apple does well — making accessories feel like fashion. And honestly? The colors are lovely. If the hardware isn’t inspiring me, at least my phone case will.
The Bigger Picture: A Week Just Getting Started
Here’s where I have to pump the brakes on my own disappointment. March 2 was Day One. Apple still has MacBook Airs with M5 chips, potentially a new lower-cost MacBook with an A-series chip, possibly new iPad models, and more rumored for the rest of this week. The multi-day blitz is still unfolding.
And the products themselves? They’re good. The iPhone 17e at $599 USD / $899 CAD with an A19 chip, MagSafe, and 256GB of storage is objectively a better deal than its predecessor. The iPad Air M4 at $599 USD / $799 CAD with 12GB of RAM and M4 performance is one of the best-value computing devices Apple has ever made.
I just miss the days when Apple launches made my jaw drop. When I’d watch a keynote and think, I didn’t know I needed that, but now I can’t imagine life without it. These are refinements. Excellent refinements. But refinements nonetheless.
Maybe the rest of the week will surprise me. Maybe there’s a product coming that’ll make me feel like it’s 2007 again, when Steve Jobs pulled an iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator out of a single device and changed everything.
I’ll be watching. Refreshing. Hoping.
Because that’s what Apple fans do.
